how much calories should someone who weighs about 150lbs.take in for getting ready for a competition that is 12 weeks away

A good Start would be Body weight x15 so 2250. Minus calories if your not Loosing weight, or add calories if you are loosing weight to fast. Your diet will need to change as you get closer to the contest. 2250 is just a starting number.

Some diet tips for Loosing fat:
Must be an a caloric deficit (burning more calories then you take in)
A good caloric starting number is body weight in pounds x 15.
A good rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds a week, but this depends on your current Bodyfat levels.
Keep your protein intake high to maintain muscle.
Eat a sufficient amount of carbohydrates so you can continue to perform well in the gym. But still remain in a caloric deficit.
Eat health fats, omegas etc, as these actualy help with fat burning!
Track your progress so you can see if something is working or not!

@Samuel

Ok 1st off, you dont need to train for 2 hours twice a day!
1 hour of hard training each day, 4-5 times a week is perfect for building mass.
Perfect your diet! and Learn how your body reacts to different nutrients. Make sure your diet is working for your current goal, wether it be gaining mass or loosing body fat. Always Track your progress!
There are many different bodybuilding federations, choose one that you want to compete in, then visit their website and see what contests they have in your area. They will also most likely have instructions on how to enter their contests.

A good Calorie starting number for adding mass is Bodyweight x20, or Bodyweight x15 +200-500 cals
so about 2500 to 3000 cals would be a good start.

have a look around our site, and see the body-weights of the bodybuilders, that will give you a good idea.
At the end of the day, they do not weigh you on the stage, so dont be too focused on body weight, just use it as one of your tools to track your progress, aswell as the MIRROR, BodyFat Tests etc.

I heard about the Bionic Edge Mass Gainer from Nick Wright and I looked it up on bodybuilding.com and it is a very expensive product. If I was to buy a $100 10lb container of it, would that be enough to see significant gains or are several 10lb containers needed?

Author Feb 7, 2011
5:03 pm
#21 Administrator :

@Kyle
Do not expect to see significant gains just because you have started taking a new product. Significant gains will come from months and years of consistent hard training and a proper diet geared toward your goals.
Gains are usually noticeable after 6-10 weeks of consistent training and nutrition.

@josue Sosa
Start out by looking for a contest in your area that is is at a date that you will have plenty of time to prepare for!
To look for contests, I would recommend NaturalBodybuildingevents.com.
Choose your contest, and get in contact with the organizer, ask them what you need to do to enter the contest,
Usually you need to 1st become a member of that particular federation which usually requires a yearly membership fee.
Then enrol for the contest you want to compete in, and get preparing!
Give yourself atleast 12 weeks to prepare for a contest. I would recommend at least 15 weeks if it’s your 1st contest!

Best way to stay motivated is to set a goal, set an achievable goal, with a time frame. Make every day accountable to that goal. Keep that goal in your mind, and work your hardest towards it. REMEMBER why you go to the gym every day.

@wirea hagreves
It is hard to Loose body fat and build muscle, but the best way to go about it would be, Eating 200-300 calories over your Lean Body Mass maintenance , so if you are 200lbs and 15% Body fat, your lean body mass would be around 170lbs.
so 170lbs x15 +300 = 2850. There is a starting number for a 200lbs person with 15% Body fat. It is so important to track your progress tightly to make sure things are working, and so you can change things if they aren’t.
Yes keep your protein high, and enough carbs for energy to perform well in the gym.
Eggs, Red meat, Chicken, Fish. Oats, Rice, Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Pastas etc, good food!!!

Tips for Gaining Weight.

- Remember gaining weight comes down to calories in vs Calories out. You need to be eating more calories then you burn.
- Make Sure you are eating enough protein! 1-2g per pound of bodyweight.
- Dont forget healthy Fats!

Tips for adding calories to your diet:

- OLIVE OIL!! add it to some of your protein shakes, (not for post workout)
Olive oil is a great source of healthy fats, and is calorie DENCE!

- MILK!! Drink your MILK!! Dont be afraid to wash down some of your meals with a big glass of milk! it is a great protein and even carbohydrate source!

can u give me a good tricep workout to do?

Author Feb 10, 2011

#41 Administrator :

@Mark Lomu
Alright, a good calorie starting number for you would be 3200-3400 calories.
try to get in 200-300g of protein a day.
Protein Sources:
Lean Meats such as, Red Meat, Fish, Chicken, turkey etc. As well as eggs, milk, yogurt, Whey Protein etc.
Also Try to get in 100g of Healthy fats a day, Nuts, peanut butter, almond butter, avacado, olive oil etc.
And get the rest of your calories from carbohydrates like; Rice, Oats, Potatoes, pasta, Breads etc.
1g Protein = 4 calories
1g Carbohydrate = 4 calories
1g Fat = 9 calories
So with 250 Protein, and 100g Fat thats 1900 Calories, that leaves about 1300-1500 calories left for carbs, So about 350 – 400g carbs.

Hope that helps

Long walks alone will not help you loose bodyfat.
To loose bodyfat you must be in a caloric deficit. Burning more then you take in. Simply the slower you loose bodyweight the more likely you will keep more muscle mass, depending on your current bodyfat levels.

Long walks are just another way to burn calories. How ever from a performance perspective they are very inefficient. You can burn alot more calories with 15 minutes of high intensity cardio.
